Usage Note 38172: The XLS engine in the IMPORT procedure might not respond when you import XLS files from Microsoft Excel 5 or Excel 95
The IMPORT procedure might not respond when you use the XLS engine to import XLS files from Microsoft Excel 5 or Excel 95. If you run PROC IMPORT in batch mode, the log does not show that the procedure ran. The log only displays what ran before PROC IMPORT.
Depending on the Excel file, you can also have other possible errors, such as segmentation violations.
The problem occurs because the XLS engine does not recognize this type of file in SAS® 9.1.3.
To circumvent the problem, do one of the following:
- Save the XLS file in an Excel 97 or Excel 2003 format.
- Use SAS® 9.2. The problem is fixed in this release of SAS.

For software releases that are not yet generally available, the Fixed
Release is the software release in which the problem is planned to be
fixed.
When you use the XLS engine to import older Microsoft Excel files (Excel 5 or Excel 95), the IMPORT procedure might not respond. This problem is fixed in SASĀ® 9.2.
